I''m a huge fan of David Bowie and was delighted to find this amazing offering on Amazon. The music is memorable and delivered by Bowie in his customary unique fashion. I can''t shed much history on this piece, but can say that I enjoyed it as a great mix which sort of resonates in my mind as the usual show tune on acid.

Phenomenal voice. Bowie was clearly a man who possessed many talents and could have easily been popular in any era due to his diversity. He accomplished so much in his life but was limited by time and health. He will go down in history as one of the greats.

I''m glad that the 1982 David Bowie in Bertolt Brecht''s Baal-EP is now available in mp3 download form. All though I have two 12" copies and one 7" copy, it is nice to have the mp3s available. I do wish it could get a full CD release, though, with expanded artwork and maybe reflections on the project by Bowie, producer Tony Visconti or others. Possibly, they could release it as a CD/DVD and we could get a DVD release of the BBC TV-movie as well. I am a big fan of Brecht and Bowie so I have always loved Bowie''s reverence for Brecht. Before the Baal project came about, Bowie had been performing the Brecht/Weill tune Alabama Song live in 1978. He recorded it in studio that same year but the recording did not surface until 1980 as a single A-Side (and is now available on a few Bowie compilations like: The Best of David Bowie 1980 - 1987.)

As for the songs here: All of the lyrics have been translated into English by the late John Willett, a meticulous and well-respected authority on Brecht. Baal''s Hymn, Remembering Marie A, and The Ballad of the Adventurers are all based on tunes and compositions by Brecht dating back to the early 1920s. These tunes were made for Brecht to sing in cabarets and also became popular performance pieces for the likes of Ernst Busch. They are arranged for small orchestra, here, by Dominic Muldowney. The music for The Drowned Girl is taken from an unrelated Kurt Weill project, The Berlin Requiem, where he set poems by Brecht for three male voices and orchestra. It has been adapted here, of course, for a solo voice. This has been done elsewhere, Lotte Lenya, Gisela May and others have performed the song solo as well. The Dirty Song is a bit of a curiosity. It was set to music by Dominic Muldowney. In German the song is called Baals-Lied (Baal''s Song) and I know that there is a pre-established tune for it by Brecht (which I prefer.) I don''t know why they chose not to use it. The version here is good, though.

Overall, I love this release. I particularly love the epic Baal''s Hymn, the melancholy Remembering Marie A, and the viscous Ballad of the Adventurers. I would defiantly recommend this to any Bowie or Brecht fan. But I think it could be enjoyed by any casual, open-minded listener.

I thought I had all there was (within reason) in Bowie''s vast catalog. I''m not so obsessive to acquire every b-side and remix ever made by the genre-shifting master, but somehow the existence of this 1982 EP eluded me until I was browsing the mp3s on Amazon. Recorded as part of a BBC TV play, in which Bowie played the lead, this is a very traditional - very much NOT rock and roll - set of songs. I find it a fascinating detour between the Scary Monsters and Let''s Dance albums, which have always seemed curiously disconnected. While this music doesn''t connect them, it does show Bowie performing with energy, his restless creativity shining through. Overall, it''s not a major statement or a lost masterpiece, but it''s fun, quirky, and not at all what you''d expect from Bowie circa 1982.

Forgot about this Baal ep, so it was good to see that Amazon stocked the 10” vinyl version. Only a real Bowie fan would be interested, but Bowie is at his best singing songs from Bertold Brecht’s “Baal”
